Home Remedies: Swimmer's Ear Drops

With Summer in full throttle and still a couple of months to go, here is a simple DIY recipe I have used for years to fight a swimmer's ear, a collection of moisture at the outer ear canal often referred to as otitis externa.

Ear infections are very common in the summers due to increased water time and frequency and the repeated exposure to moisture; which then breeds funguses and bacteria. Swimmer's ear can often go unnoticed until it progresses and becomes more painful.

If your kiddos are anything like mine, they share a deep love for water during the summer months. Whether that be trips to our traditional beloved Texas river or lake or our own backyard pool, they are in it.

Six years ago, after having to take one of them in for repeated ear infections (swimming-induced) and multiple antibiotic course treatments, I knew there was a better way to address this naturally.

Here is a simple mixture I use. Apply with a cotton ball or a dropper and cover with a cotton ball for a few minutes.

Mix: 1 Tablespoon White Vinegar

1 Tablespoon Rubbing Alcohol

Stir together and cover. These ingredients serve as a "drying agent" to help prevent growth of fungus and bacteria. Do Not Refrigerate, as the cold can be too uncomfortable. I add to a glass dropper bottle until needed. I make a new batch every few days.

Enjoy the remaining days of Summer!

If you try this, let me know how it works for you.

*If tenderness or pain persists, seek medical attention as it may have worsened.
